YIPPEE, Supplemental Data
YIPPEE Calculation of actual 14' yurt erection time(Dec 2003): 21.33 hours total For construction of the 14' yurt, by two persons who had never erected a yurt before, and excluding time for: platform construction, uncrating, Cassandra's shots downtime, breaks for food, rain-related setbacks and the Snow & Wind Kit re-do. Note: The Snow and Wind Kit portion of above = 9.5 hours Detail: 12/23 thru 12/24/03: 6PM start thru 10PM= 4 hrs -40 min (two shots downtime) = 3.33hrs 10:30PM thru 1AM= 2.5hrs 1:30AM thru 5AM= 3.5hrs(*2) 6AM thru 7AM= 1.0hrs(*1) (*subtract for work on snow & wind kit which had to be redone) = -3.0hrs 12/26/03: 12:30PM thru 6PM, minus 1/2hr break for food= 5.0hrs 12/27/03: 12:30PM thru 11PM = 10.5hrs -1.5hrs for lunch & dinner breaks= 9.0 hrs Total time for all days= 21.33 hrs. YIPPEE What We Need To Do Differently Next Time (Learned From Our 14' Yurt Erection in Dec 2003) Have at least two 'safe-for-Cass' drills for the 14' yurt (or more for the 30', relative to number of persons helping) Do not follow the part of the instruction manual which has the rafter supports attached to the rafters first. Instead, do each complete rafter support attaching to bottom and then top keeping plumb, flush and level. (as we ended up doing on 12/26) Have a tarp or other covering, for the entire yurt, readily available in the event of rain. Figure out better draft sealing where side cover meets drip edge. (possibly better weatherstripping, and/or attaching side liner to drip edge?) The following should either be kept entirely away from Cassandra, or safe alternatives substituted: the Pacific Yurts hardware box stay out of garage orange drill use only safe plastic coverings top cover lining package PVC pipe(s) wood ladder(have safe ladders) nylon cord
