YIPPEE Volume Twenty-Three: July 2006
The Two Skinny J's visit YIPPEE-Land!

2 Skinny J's
July's hot-hot days
and mountain's view a haze

Two skinny J's, on the land, helping build! The Two Skinny J's was a band, back in C+C's Baltimore days, with music made for jumpin'. Cassandra remembered them while reflecting that the two helpers during July have names beginning with J and are both healthfully fit (and, it could, perhaps, be said, skinny). While C+C weren't actually jumping around in the presence of Jere and Julien, their hearts did some metaphoric jumping, as in for joy!

July started with a Jere and darn near ended with a Jere. (What's a Jere, and how do you pronounce it? Begin by saying 'Jeremiah' and then drop the 'Miah'. Jair-uh. Jere. People in the Jere Fan Club have been known to say such things as, "He's such a cutie"! and "We love that guy!".) Jere has been a part of Chris and Cassandra's adventures long before the inception of YIPPEE, and July continued this trend. What a guy! July 1st saw The Jere onsite; a bit chagrined that cement work was still in progress, but cheerfully joining in nonetheless. Cassandra worked on footings with Jere and Chris; very chagrined about the nasty bug infested humid air, but cheerfully appreciative of being able to see Jere and be involved this time.

The next Jere Join-In happened on July 30th. Jere, accompanied by Connie, trekked down to help Chris move the 2*6 tongue-and-groove floor boards: from Poocham into the Vermoose and Jere-mobile truck beds, over to the land, up the steep YIPPEE driveway, and out of the trucks onto the 20' yurt platform structure. This flooring transport event took two trips, most all day (during which Cassandra was sequestered inside the yurt) and lots of gasoline (or, as they say in the UK, petrol).

Team YIPPEE is now international! Making a rare US appearance, Julien fit a YIPPEE-Land visit into his busy tour schedule. He also opted for a working visit. Woohoo! (C+C last hosted visitors, merely for the sake of visiting, over two years ago. Now, they were willing to take a day "off", but also happy to keep working while visiting. Especially with yurt raising looming large and soon...) After some catching-up and a bit of an onsite tour, Julien joined in the construction fun, eshewing offers of bugshirt or bughat. Fortunately, by the time of his visit, July 29th, the bugs were not quite so prevalent during mid-day. C+C donned bugshirts and hats by early afternoon, but brave Julien was not to be bothered. Perhaps he was so enamored with finally getting to see the land and little yurt that he was blissfully oblivious to the biting little buggers... Regardless, C+C were joyed to see him (jumpin' for joy only in spirit, because to do so in actuality might be rather dangerous on the construction site) and appreciated having some more good vibes infused into their eventual home!

More July Joys:
(worthy of jumpin', if conditions would have allowed)
  • July was jump-started with a whole week of Chris! He had a week off employer-related work. C+C enjoyed seeing each other daily. And, of course, it was a week of much YIPPEE-related work! Cassandra impressed Chris with her bulging biceps and concrete mixing abilities, while (among other things) they...
  • Finished the MLA footings! Finally! At 1:25 pm on July 3rd the last deck footing was smoothed and, subsequently, photographed for posterity.
  • The new screenhouse, established mid-month, rocks! This third version actually has the no-see-um netting it claimed to have, as well as all-important air vents on top. Ahhh. Naming hasn't been quite worked out yet though: SIPPEE 3 seems kinda boring.

July's Non-Joys:
(worthy of not-jumpin'... even if conditions allowed)
  • Humidity! Humid Humid Humid
  • Buggy! Bugs Bugs Bugs
  • Shortly after finishing with the footings task, C+C assessed remaining tasks and time estimates. Insistence that the yurts would be raised this year resulted in a drastic reduction of pre-yurt raising tasks. Labor Day was deemed the best time to schedule yurt raising because... Team members might have that Monday off anyway and could possibly coordinate additional time off, Chris could take the rest of the week off, and the liklihood of snow and cold weather (deemed a deterrent to corralling helpers) was only going to increase afterwards. Abandonment of the original timeline still left C+C with a required minimum of 47hrs onsite work per week, in order to get to the Labor Day yurt raising. Argh!
  • The required minimum definitely could not be met without Cassandra's help. And that was debilitated by: Logging... Last year's weather hadn't allowed for logging to be finished prior to Cassandra's arrival onsite, as planned. Even now, the loggers used a road higher uphill (and thus, closer to the yurt) than was specified in the contract, due to the lower road being too damaged by rains. Ideally, C+C would have figured out a better way to handle the logging so that Cassandra wouldn't get sick, but adequate notice was not given. The sound of logging equipment nearby was Cassandra's notice that logging was going to happen that day. Too late to plan. Crisis management commenced. She shut up the yurt and covered the dome to prevent some of the sun's yurt-warming heat buildup. Chris had already been up top working. When he realized what was happening and came down to Park Avenue, he and she talked through the yurt walls to make their plans for handling the event already underway. Cassandra remained in the dark, non-air conditioned, hot-hot-hot, closed up yurt until logging ceased that evening. The exhaust exposure was limited but unavoidable, as the yurt isn't a 100 % closed up building and the equipment was closer to the yurt than it should have been. She was very ill for days, slightly less ill for several more days and then eventually, recovered. C+C ended up paying the loggers to quit the contract, so that they wouldn't come back. Having Cassandra out of commission like this is not only bad for her health, but debilitating to YIPPEE's progress.

Some other July stuff, neither joyful or joyless.
Just stuff:
  • There is now a bathtub in the yard at Poocham. Why? Hey, it was free! Maybe C+C will one day clean it up and revamp it for use. Maybe one day it will be a YIPPEE hot tub overlooking the mountain view.
  • Park Avenue's yurt window finally came off, after the awning was installed, providing some relief on hot days.
  • No-see-um netting was installed over the door, dome and window. All three can now be open at night for better sleeping.
  • Cassandra must still wear a face mask while hiking uphill to the MLA site.
  • Lots of materials transport happened. This could arguably be listed under both Joy (Yeah! Supplies are onsite to be used) and Joyless (Argh! Lots of carrying uphill). According to C+C's handy-dandy pocket reference book, each 4*6 douglas fir beam carried up the extremely steep driveway weighs 70lbs (at the 12' length) or 46.7lbs (at the 8' length). Doing transport this way: a) avoided vehicle exhaust and making Cassandra ill b) made Chris feel o-so-macho and studly! He sure looked it, walking up the finally (even steeper) part of the driveway with a 12' beam across his shoulders.
  • Chris' line regarding construction seems to be "I don't know, I'm just a database guy." Cassandra then replied, "I just did what Chris told me to do." Hmmm...
  • Deck boards were screwed down up front. Once Chris got the hang of what should happen, he handed this over to Cassandra. Eventually, she would figure out even better ways to make the work easier. But for July, it was mostly a big ol' pain of a task.
  • Cassandra's other major task, started in July, was also big, and sometimes caused physical pain too: shaping the MLA ground for drainage and laying gravel over the site. This involved digging up and hauling off lots of plants, digging and lugging lots of dirt out from under the existing structure, carefully avoiding that structure, not always succeeding, moving lots of dirt to areas that needed built up, raking lots of dirt out and tamping it down, hauling lots of gravel up the steep incline by the bucket full, dumping and raking that out, and (for those areas cleared down to ledge) getting mega dusty-dirty using hands and a broom to clean off the ledge. All in some mega humid and mega buggy conditions.

Whew!

213.01 Posts + Beams (Deck)

  • Eight deck posts were raised today, including all remaining corners and those posts for the ridge/western side.
  • A ninth post is cut and needs only a second coat of sealer on the cut end so it can be nailed in place under the angled section on the view/eastern side of the deck.
  • Somehow Chris managed to put one of the two footings for the aforementioned angle section about six inches off the mark. Since the marking was via plumb line dropped off an existing beam Chris concludes that there must have been a micro-earthquake und
