YIPPEE Volume 36
August 2007

Winter in Summer: A-plowin' we will go...

C+C finally finish last winter's tasks...
Just in time to start for this year's winter and...
Sweat in the humid heat while pouring footings.

One cold day in August, amidst several chilly days, Chris finally works on The Vermoose. Once unstuck, from its four-month-plus perch atop a big boulder, the plow and chains are removed, and last Winter's snow related tasks are finally checked off!

Is that a snowflake?

Maybe not, but there were frost warnings, and many days in August worthy of long underwear base layering. In an extended cold spell mid-month, when the seven-layer system was shiveringly inadequate, C+C succumbed; the woodstove was cleaned and, at 7:02PM on 8/19, fired up for its first use of the season.

Isn't it still summer?

Yes. According to the calendar. Seemingly confused, Summer and Winter Temperatures lost their places, and dueled frequently throughout the month. Drastic and frequent vacillations between "brrbrrbrr! cold!" and "hot, hot, humid and gross!" sorely tried Cass' patience; living at Camp YIPPEE requires constant monitoring of the weather to accommodate things such as how to pack for the day, showering and food. During one sudden heat spell, Cassandra says to Chris, "well, at least its only 96F in here now".

Sweating and Pouring: Footings Done!

The shed was emptied of concrete bags; these were transported up to the Power House area ala Chris and Micromoose. 800# of newly purchased concrete bags were driven up to PH ala Chris and Xterra; unloaded during another mini-concert. More huge rock removal and digging happened and, six days later, on August 11th, in plenty of time to set before winter truly begins, the Power House footings were completed!

The next day... as one of its last YIPPEE duties before going away, the Xterra helped Chris transport more newly purchased concrete. En route to the top of the driveway, a quick stop was made to load up surplus PH concrete and transport that up top as well. Later, Chris enlisted Burly Bob to assist in hauling all the concrete bags from the driveway drop-off, up to the Utility Shed site. C+C poured sweat in the hot humidity and bugs while mixing and pouring two footings. (Though, to be more accurate, YIPPEE footings are shoveled and not "poured")

The following weekend, Chris says, "the hammer drill is fun but heavy!" after drilling into rock for the South Side Stairs and one of the US footings. The Vermoose, freshly released from its big boulder bind, was put to work hauling additional concrete up top.

On the subsequent weekend, US footings were completed, at 5:07pm on 8/26. "Whew!". There are only footings for the south side stairs, and then concrete work will be DONE! Until C+C come up with other... No, nevemind.

Where did the Xterra go?

Much to Chris' chagrin, aggravation and discontent, Nissan of Keene had the Xterra for the latter half of the month and into September. The prolonged and unplanned absence caused numerous glitches in C+C's plans. For example, the first rental car given to Chris as a substitute for the Xterra couldn't make the steep up-driveway trek. A planned trailer purchase, and lots of other materials purchasing, had to be postponed. Registration and inspection of all the YIPPEE vehicles could not be postponed, and was made needlessly time consuming and complicated. Insisting that the Xterra substitute should be able to climb the driveway, Chris was given a different rental; a Nissan Armada "Gas Guzzling Monstrosity". This climbed ably and hauled stuff, but Chris was to remain unsettled until his Xterra was home.

Where did the trees go?

Downhill. Chris and Team YIPPEE Mike, onsite for his second visit to YIPPEE-Land, axed and sawed through about half the trees felled in July at the PH. Carrying the resulting logs to their destination was given up as too much hard labor, and deer harnessing was merely a fleeting fancy. What developed was a method whereby logs were dragged down a chute-like depression in the ground and eventually lined up in the driveway. From here, they would be rolled down to Woodshed#2 using a pry bar as occasional brake on momentum.

Where did all the time go?

August's site work hours tallied to a disappointing number. What a frustrating month! Chris keeps reminding Cassandra that we track task hours, not per-person hours; and, C+C worked together on tasks more this month than in recent months. There were numerous lost site-hours due to travel glitches and problems related to a lack of Xterra. Chris' week home started a whole day later than planned, in sudden blazing heat and with far too many coordinations and preparations; preparations that sure seemed futile later.

But, hey, stuff happened!

Even though it didn't look like much in numbers, footings completion for the two buildings (PH and US) was a big accomplishment. And, hey, a bunch of other stuff happened too...

In fact, #742.00, "Just a Bunch of Stuff That Happened", happened! This new task, created by Chris, covers small tasks that have to happen, but aren't specific to other tasks. And, it makes him chuckle to be doing JaBoSTH! He also created "861.39 Movin' Stuff Around". These new tasks barely took a half day of site-work combined, but the Stress Combating Silliness factor makes them worthwhile. During Mike's visit, another task was proposed. He exhibited heretofore unseen expertise at "Holding Down the Deck" and offered this helpful hint: find a shady spot. Time on this task varied, wasn't tracked, and didn't actually count; but lo' an behold, the deck has not gone anywhere!

The deck is sporting a brand new screenhouse, SIPPEE4, Securely In Place, Providing Enclosure Eh?... Or, something like that. Entomological Escape for an outdoor, staining and sealing Elevated Emporium, up on the deck. Cassandra says this is a drastic improvement over the old Poocham staining and sealing space, as she gets to work on parts for the PH, deck angle add-on, and stairs.

"Surprisingly fast!", says Chris after he and Cass cut the 2*8's for the PH by handsaw. After these were sealed by Cass in the aforementioned new screenhouse, Chris and Mike got to work building the beams.

Throughout the month, internal walls of the 20' yurt continued their slow tedious progress, including oh-so-dusty-sanding of walls, installation of walltops, and beginning struggles with moulding.

Throughout the month, impervious to the doings of YIPPEE-Land, the sun, moon and stars continued their cycles. On 8/27, atop the deck, Chris cut boards by the last light of sun, and first light of moon. What a setting! The shift towards winter daylight hours is an unpleasant one for the frustrated C+C, but it sure makes for some very pretty skyscapes.

Perhaps fittingly, C+C spent the morning of the last day of August dealing with frustrating non-site-work tasks, because, hey...

A bunch of stuff had to happen! And they did it!
