YIPPEE Volume Spotty Floor
(otherwise known as Volume Thirty-Four)
June 2007

69.01% of site-work this month was floor related (almost all non-budgeted time too)

There once was a floor that held up the yurt that lived by the house, that never-ever should have been rented by Chris and Cassandra. Now, that floor sits at the Turnaround on Main Drive, under a tent, awaiting the arrival of the next Team YIPPEE visitor!

All the floors of YIPPEE have stories. Ask The Mud-Wallowing Carpenter Troll about the Park Avenue floor and she'll say, "from down below, everything looks just fine!". Ask Chris and he'll say, "I really wish I'd have thought to install the boards upside down". Cassandra will concur and add a curse about the Watershield, that left the floor tacky and has transfered a lot of black from their shoes.

But, this is not a story about the Park Avenue floor. June 2007 holds a story of the floors of the MLA and their struggle to transform into their fully functioning fabulous selves!

It all began one dark, stormy night. Well, it might have. Who knows? A seed whipped around, and finally landed, to take hold and brace itself against the storm to grow stronger and eventually become a tree, only to be taken down, stripped and milled into 2*6 tongue and groove boards...

But, this isn't exactly a story about the boards that came to together to make the floors, that hold up the yurts. If it was, those boards would tell a tale of horror, about a woman who got horribly sick while working in a horrible house to coat the boards with Watershield; about spending a long boring year and a half wrapped up inside that house before finally escaping in the back of Jere's truck and the Vermoose. Once they got to YIPPEE-Land things weren't so bad. (Chris and Cassandra might not have liked the hot, humid and buggy conditions, working under a huge blue tarp. But that story has already been told)

After the boards were brought together, both floors underwent similar experiences, though at different times. The floors were sanded, trimmed to the appropriately sized circles, wiped clean and coated thinly with Watershield. From here, it was supposed to be pretty easy: protected during yurt raisings and internal constructions, the floors would later be finished and appreciated.

The yurt raising rains ruined all notions of easy. Beforehand, several sock-wearing Team YIPPEE people enjoyed the floor, sliding around, chasing, laughing and even dueling, as the first day of yurt-raising proceeded. Overnight, rain and wind collapsed the tarp. Rainwater pooled on the floor until cleanup the next day, which included a release of the drip edge. For the rest of yurt raising, shoes were worn... muddy, muddy shoes. It would be a long time before the floor felt the joy of sock wearing, laughing people.

Apparently, into every floor's life, some rain must fall because the 20' yurt floor also experienced yurt raising rains. Try as C+C did to protect it, with heavy duty paper drop cloth, it got messy and wet.

The 30' floor has yet to see Chris and Cassandra live inside the yurts, but has seen a few overnight visitors: one Team YIPPEE teammate camped inside during the 20' yurt raising, and in April, two more teammates slept overnight on the rather wrecked floor.

Mud and dirt wrecked the 30' floor more than the 20'. Both yurt floors also ended up with blueish grey spotting. The entire MLA floor was cleaned and as May's summary indicated, sanding the floor took care of most of the immovable dirt, but the spotting remained. The results of much searching told C+C that these spots were a reaction between the wood and metal (very rocky soil at YIPPEE-Land). Chris found some plain oxalic acid. And, on June 2nd, the fun of spot removal commenced... Carefully.

C+C tested the oxalic acid: on a scrap board (to see what it did and how safe it was for Cassandra), and later on an inconspicuous section of floor. The spots did come out, and the coat of finish applied aferward seemed to react normally too. Spot removal on the 30' floor began that evening after dinner.

Fix the Floor Spotting Process:

  1. Obtain filtered water from Park Ave and lug it up the very steep incline to the MLA.
  2. Make a fire in the Eagle Stove with scraps, and heat water.
  3. While heating water, prepare one bucket of plain water, and one bucket of water and baking soda mixed. Have these along with gloves, rags, brushes and tape set up on paper in the work area.
  4. Gloves on to mix oxalic acid in the hot water. Bring that bucket inside, setting it carefully on the paper with rest of supplies.
  5. Knee pads on and get scrubbing!
  6. Working in small area (a 5 board depth, and one beam width, was usual) scrub in the oxalic acid mixture until spots disappear (this can take a bit of work/time... pass the time by occasionally making comments about the odd smell: Chris says its reminiscent of either an Italian deli or an armpit in need of a serious shower)
  7. Wipe the area with the baking soda water. Repeat (and, eww this stinks too)
  8. Wipe the area down with clean water (by this point, smelling more of the natural pine floor goodness). Repeat.
  9. Later, after dry, sand the entire floor by hand with the aid of a sanding block, board-by-board, in small sections, on knees (that are by this point incredibly sore), wiping with damp rag as you go.

The entire process, task# 320.30 Fix Floor Spotting, for 1,020 sq feet of floor, done about 2/3rd solo, took 75.75 hours of June's site work time!

Task# 213.31 Flooring Finish consumed 71.50 hours of June's site work time, involving:

  1. Work in smaller sections than for sanding or oxalic acid, to ensure even and careful application (reduce to a 3 board depth).
  2. Ensure area is a clean as possible (keep rag and masking tape handy).
  3. Brush finish on carefully, keeping an eye out for stray bristles and bits of debris (remove carefully). The goal is to leave as few brush marks and bits of debris as possible.
  4. After the 1st coat is dry, lightly sand the entire floor by hand with the aid of a sanding block, board-by-board, in small sections, on knees, wiping with damp rag as you go.
  5. Apply 2nd coat (boy-o-boy this is getting tedious!)
  6. Lightly sand and wipe again.
  7. Apply 3rd coat, a matte finishing coat (which looks chunky and weird, but mixes up OK and looks great when dry)
  8. Woohoo! (06/28/07: 30ft is finished!! 30ft is finished!!)
  9. Repeat all these steps for the 20' floor. At the end of June, application of flooring finish is not yet finished. The 20' floor was just barely started (on 6/29).

Floor ENJOYMENT at the end of June!
(zero site work hours, but a helluvalotta fun!)
C+C discover the floor is quite slippery with socks. A bunch of sliding around ensues, including Chris dragging Cass around by her feet. Cass reciprocates. There hasn't been this much laughter and good fun in the 30' yurt since the first day of yurt raising when Sarah, Jere and Connie were onsite. The amplification of laughter (and singing, and various other sounds) when standing in dead center of an empty 30' yurt is pretty darn freaky and found to be fun too!
